Dear Families,
Although the weather kept us at home for part of the week, learning and growing continued! On Wednesday, our school was taken over by the elderly, with several “100-year-olds” arriving with canes, gray hair, and reading glasses. It was a fun and memorable day for everyone!
We also completed our class-level spelling bee contests this week. Families should have been notified by now if their student advanced to the school-wide spelling bee on February 6. Family members are welcome to attend this competition!
After-school tutoring is now available for math students in grades 7 and 8 on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 4:15 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to receive free, valuable academic support whether they need extra help, want to build confidence, or simply benefit from additional practice. Students who participate in spring sports can also attend tutoring on these days if practices or games are canceled. Guardians simply need to email Mrs. Holly Moffitt (moffitth@wcde.org) by 2:30 p.m. on the day of tutoring to let her know their child will be staying.
Next week, mid-term reports will be sent home in envelopes along with our February calendar and an additional sign-up for Family Connection Days. Please sign and return the mid-term envelope. Also, be on the lookout for Parent/Teacher Conference forms. Conferences will be held after school on February 9, with appointments available until 7:00 p.m. I hope everyone has a great weekend and stays safe and warm!

Introducing: Family Connection Days! |
Here at SS, we have been brainstorming new ways to help families stay connected. One of the best ways to do this is by setting up the WCS app. Within this one app, families can receive real-time announcements from the school and from individual teachers through their classroom “rooms.”
If you need help getting started or navigating the app, we are happy to help. If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, simply send Mrs. McInturff an email at mcinturffk@wcde.org with the time and date you would prefer to meet.
We can also assist families with navigating PowerSchool or other websites their students use during this time, including setting up alerts that notify you when your child’s grade changes due to a new assignment.
Upcoming Dates: February 9, February 23 Available Times: Morning, Midday, or 3 pm-6 pm | |

Exploring Sound: A 2nd Grade Adventure |
Get ready for an exciting journey into the world of sound! Our 2nd grade students will become sound explorers as they visit different stations to discover how sounds can change and vary. Here's what they'll experience: Bell Listening Station: Listen to two different bells and compare their sounds. Mystery Shaker Station: Shake blocks to guess what's inside based on the sound they make.
Funnel Fun Station: Connect funnels to tubing and listen to your own voice. Try different positions to see how the sound changes! Tuning Fork Station: Strike a tuning fork and listen closely. Then, touch it to a bell and observe what happens. Water Wonders Station: Strike a tuning fork and dip it in water to see the fascinating effects.
This hands-on investigation will help students understand how sounds are created and how they can vary in different situations. Making noises to bring science to life! |

In 7th grade, students explore the fascinating process of mitosis, where cells create exact replicas of themselves. Using microscopes to observe real examples of each stage deepens their understanding and is evident as they work through interactive online quizzes and games.
Hands-on activities, like building clay models, brings mitosis to life as they design the steps of cell division. The final products make the process easier to visualize. This engaging approach helps students grasp how new cells are formed. |

Create Your Own Animal Using TinkerCad |
In our exciting project, 5th-grade students explore adaptations by inventing a brand-new animal perfectly suited to survive in its environment. Using their creativity, students select features from different animals and transform them into imaginative 3D designs. The challenge is to use basic shapes and parts from existing animals to craft an entirely new creature. Once these amazing animals meet the expectations of the task, they're ready to be brought to life with a 3D printer. Watch out for these creatures! |

Middle School Theatre Shines: The Lion King Rehearsals Underway
Our middle school theatre students have been working hard rehearsing The Lion King! As a musical, the production asks more than just memorized lines. Students are also mastering choreography and singing. We’re proud of the dedication they show both during class and on their own time. Their commitment, teamwork, and growing confidence are inspiring. We can’t wait to see their performance bring this beloved story to life! |
