STEM DESIGNATION

Our teachers have been reinforcing the Engineering Design Process (EDP) with our students for the last 3 years. This is an essential framework for students to learn and apply as it equips them with critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. Here are some reasons why using the EDP is important for students:

1. Encourages Problem-Solving and Innovation

The EDP helps students approach challenges systematically by:

  • Defining a problem.

  • Brainstorming solutions.

  • Iterating based on feedback.
This process fosters creativity and the ability to think outside the box, enabling students to develop innovative solutions to real-world issues.

2. Develops Critical Thinking Skills

Students learn to analyze problems, evaluate multiple solutions, and make decisions based on evidence. Each step of the process encourages reflective and analytical thinking.

3. Teaches Resilience and Adaptability

Through iterative testing and redesign, students learn to embrace failure as a natural part of problem-solving. This builds resilience and helps them adapt their ideas to improve outcomes.

4. Promotes Teamwork and Collaboration

Most engineering projects involve group efforts. The EDP emphasizes brainstorming, sharing ideas, and working collaboratively, which are key skills for success in the workplace.

5. Reinforces STEM Learning

The EDP integrates science, technology, engineering, and math concepts in a practical way. By applying theoretical knowledge to tangible problems, students see the relevance of what they’re learning in class.

6. Encourages Lifelong Learning

The EDP is a transferable framework. Students who learn it can apply it to diverse fields beyond engineering, such as business, healthcare, and education.

Student Leadership Team Presentations

The Student Leadership Team introduced an innovative motivational concept aimed at middle school students, detailing the development process of this idea and outlining future steps for its implementation.

Additionally, they showcased their approach to the STEAM leaders from North Cumberland Elementary School located in Crossville, Tennessee. They illustrated how the Student Leadership Team facilitates connections between students and our school's administration.

Using the Engineering Design Process

Kindergarten Students' Town Project

In their recent project, kindergarten students engaged in the exciting task of constructing a town. They explored the various components necessary for a town to operate effectively, including restaurants, businesses, fire departments, farms, grocery stores, homes, and gas stations. Each student contributed individual details to their designs, which were combined to create an amazing town structure.

The final models were proudly displayed for parents and community members to appreciate. As part of the project, the students also designed a roadway and utilized the Indi robot along with coding pads, enabling the car to navigate through their created town. This hands-on experience fostered essential skills such as problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and communication, all of which were crucial for successfully completing the project.

Classroom STEAM Achievements

K-2

2nd Grade Balloon Creations

Sulphur Springs 2nd grade students created beautiful balloons that were carried and displayed during the Parade of Balloons & More. Their designs were encouraged after reading the story of the addition of Balloons for the Macy's Day Parade. Balloons Over Broadway inspired the plan.

Students used their own ideas as they designed and built their balloons. Imagination and creativity were definitely demonstrated in their final products. The parade route through the hallways of the school was exciting as they were cheered on by students in all grade levels.

5th Grade ELA: Exploring the US Constitution

The 5th grade students have been reading and learning about the US Constitution. Considering the ideas they have been exploring in class, the student developed their own 5th Grade Bill of Rights.

Students were engaged in sharing their own ideas and perspectives. This lead to collaborative discussions considering what they thought were the most important details for all 5th grade students.

After writing out the new Bill of Rights for their grade level, each student signed this important document.

This powerful interaction provided them with a deeper understanding of the governmental process. By using a real-world scenario, students were encouraged to think critically and develop problem-solving skills, allowing them to see the relevance of these concepts in their own lives.

Leadership Development for Middle School Students

Students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades are stepping into leadership roles within the Sulphur Springs school community. They have the opportunity to mentor and support younger students, showcasing essential life skills.

Student Leadership team addressed the middle school students about a new motivational program. Our SSES cheerleaders led a cheer camp and a performance for Homecoming. Middle school students helped with the Parade of Balloons by designing and creating balloons that were displayed on robots and carried by the students throughout the hallways.

Allowing students the experience to guide other students encourages them to adopt a learner's perspective, enhancing their understanding and empathy in various situations.

Empowering students to develop lifelong skills!
