6 CTE Towers

Sphero Blueprint Designs

The 6th grade students are asked to think like architects and civil engineers to design a tall tower. Since skyscrapers are common in large cities, the designers are challenged to make the towers tall and take their creativity to the next level. Students built tall towers that were required to be stable and safe with a moving part that served a useful purpose for the tower.

Students are experiencing productive struggle and turning their failures into successful structures. Teamwork and problem solving skills required!

Middle School Students Planting Zinnias and Marigolds

As part of our hands-on gardening unit, our enthusiastic middle school students gathered to plant zinnias and marigolds in the raised beds. Before planting, students took on the arduous task of weeding and preparing the beds by hand, which required teamwork and dedication. We are cutting it close, as it takes around 75 days for the flowers to germinate, which falls on November 11th. With the first hard frost having occurred on Halloween last year, we are hopeful that with the application of fertilizer and the strategy of covering the beds with sheets on cold nights, we might still see some blooms this season!

This experience has not been just educational but also incredibly fun, fostering a love for nature among our students. We're excited to see how our garden grows!

Classroom STEAM Achievements

K-2

K-3 Marty Silvers

Marty Silver is here!!!

Students in kindergarten to 3rd grade were excited to welcome Marty Silvers, park ranger from Warriors Path State Park into the classroom. They looked down in the grass, up in the trees, and all around for insects, birds, nests, and seeds as they learned to how to look at the world outside He stressed the importance of caring for and protecting our natural environment with amazing lessons in our own schoolyard!

3-5

5 Math

Students in 5th grade math are tracking their progress as they record information in data notebooks. Practicing a valuable skill as they set goals and watch their progress. Learning responsibility and taking ownership of their own learning. Building confidence in the challenge to meet personal goals!

6-8

6 CS Straw Rockets

Rockets were flying as the 6th grade students practiced the engineering design process. The task was to make a rocket using a straw, tape, and paper. Each student had to plan and illustrate their design, as well as create a detailed list of the materials they planned to use in the process.

Students tested their models and made improvements prior to a final test run. Applying math and science concepts, they were allowed to adjust the angulation on the straw rocket launcher and determine the amount of force to apply to the rocket.

The students created a point system based on where the rocket landed with bonus points if the rockets landed in the containers placed in strategic locations. Students tracked their progress using a point system to evaluate the best design.

Practicing engineering skills and learning to problem solve throughout the challenge!
