2 Habitat Projects

Exploring Habitats in 2nd Grade: How Do Living Things Get What They Need to Survive?

Our 2nd grade scientists have been hard at work exploring the essential question: How do living things get what they need to survive? Through a hands-on, creative project, students dove into the world of animals and their habitats, learning about the unique ways different species meet their basic needs.

Students selected an animal and conducted research using one or more books. They discovered what their animal eats, where it lives, and how it adapts to survive in its environment. Next, students ventured outside to collect natural materials and used construction paper to create textured, detailed habitat models. They paid close attention to including elements that would support their animal’s survival—like food sources, shelter, and water. Students wrote informative paragraphs explaining the needs of their chosen animal and how their habitat meets those needs.

4 Science Conductors & Insulators

What Conducts...What Insulates

In our 4th-grade science classrooms, students engage in exploration of conductors and insulators. Using batteries and small lamp bulbs, they tested materials like wood, paper clips, and aluminum foil to determine their ability to conduct electricity.
A hands-on discovery approach reinforces science concepts to support and encourage critical thinking and observation skills.

Hands-on experiences = powerful learning!

Monarch Release

Students in the 5th grade were able to observe the life cycle in real time when a student brought in caterpillars he found at home.
This is what learning looks like when students take ownership!

An engaging, inquiry-based activity deepens understanding of science concepts and gives students a reason for researching and writing, while encouraging critical thinking, environmental awareness

CTE Highlights

Middle school students helped in demonstrating the many items that are utilized in the CTE/STEM Lab. Each area is connected to career options and allow students hands on experiences as they begin to consider future courses in high school and beyond.

Preparing for future careers!

MindCave

Middle school library students explored community service by touring the school and brainstorming ways to give back locally. Inspired by their ideas, they created heartfelt cards for every resident at Four Oaks Healthcare Center in Jonesborough. Mrs. Coleman delivered the cards for us. Additionally, student Gracie Street kindly donated items to our Blessing Box. Empowering students to make a positive impact!
