Message From Dr. Little

STEM DESIGNATION

We would like to thank our parents and students for committing to improving attendance! Last school year, we decreased our chronic absenteeism percentage from 21% to 13%. This is a huge win for our students. Being present at school every day pays off with preparedness for high school and beyond.

Currently, SSES is leading the district with our Chronic Absenteeism rate. This is a big celebration. We want to keep the momentum going.

We are challenging everyone across the school to have perfect attendance on September 17th, 2024. This includes all teachers, support staff, and students. Achieving this goal will result in additional recess time and a popsicle for everyone at SSES!.

6th CS Finch Coding and Problem Solving using math skills

Finch Robot Coding

Using the Finch robot to practice math skills and block based coding, the students were tasked with developing five coded programs. They were required to measure the sides and determine the degree of the angles to navigate the Finch to form these specific shapes: square, triangle, pentagon, hexagon, and octagon.
Problem solving in action while using debugging skills to create their coding programs.!

Library Scavenger Hunt

Fourth and fifth graders took part in a Library Scavenger Hunt, collaborating in small teams to locate resources and explore different sections of the library. In the process, they discovered new books they were eager to read. This hands-on activity helped them become more familiar with the library's offerings.

Classroom STEAM Achievements

K-2

1 Schweiker Life Cycle

Life Cycle Investigations

Real life investigations and discoveries in the 1st grade as students actively observe the life cycle of a monarch butterfly. Using a microscope, students were able to see the small eggs. Students are regularly journaling changes in the caterpillars with hope for successful metamorphosis into Monarch butterflies.
Students were able to take a closer look at the wings of another species. Now, they are anxiously awaiting the new phase of the life cycle. Exciting energy in 1st grade!

3-5

5 Science Choice Board

Animal Behaviors

Giving students choices to motivate learning in the 5th grade science classes. Students made their selections from a choice board as they compared and contrasted instincts vs learned behaviors. Choice boards promote student ownership of their learning and collaboration in teams. Making learning more meaningful and powerful!

6-8

8 Math 3 Act Task

Math: 3 Act Task

The 8th grade math students were asked to consider how many times your heart beats in a decade and how our number of breaths relate to the heart beats. Students watched a real life scenario and recorded their observations and questions about what they viewed.
The authentic data collected by the students is discussed in teams and will guide them to use their math skills to provide an answer. Engagement using a 3 Act Task to connect math skills to real life...a powerful learning opportunity!
